This picture, I'm proud to say, I took. My friend is seen
here holding his baby girl and the thing I find most striking about it
are the eyes.
The photo on the left is a straight scan from a 35mm b&w
negative with one exception, I dodged (lightened) his left eye to open
it up, giving it better tone separation. However, though soft, the whole
picture lacks definition; it's a bit mushy. Then in the middle photo,
being careful not make the lighting seem too harsh, I increased the contrast
slightly to bring out the eyes in both dad and the baby girl, making the
black of their pupils stand out better from their irises.
To bring a classic
and softer feel to it, I added an oval-shaped silhouette. She's nineteen
years old now. Ouch.
